Empowering Teens and Strengthening Communities

spotivity isn’t just an app—it’s a powerful tool that helps teens discover and take part in activities outside of school. By connecting teens, program providers, and local businesses, spotivity creates a community that helps everyone thrive.

Support for the teen

Every year, more than 40 million American teens need something to do after school, but only half of them participate in activities. Families today rely more on afterschool programs to make up for cuts in school resources and enrichment opportunities. For some, these programs are essential for staying competitive in education and in life. Unfortunately, teens from lower-income families are 29% less likely to join these programs compared to their higher-income peers. Microgrant.org works to change this by bridging this gap and offering every teen the chance to spend their free time in positive and productive ways.

With partner spotivity, microgrant.org gives teens the tools to take control of their choices and reach their full potential – all the while removing monetary barriers. Using personal information like personality traits, strengths, and interests, spotivity informs users against a backdrop of over 400 potential afterschool programs, guides them through college and career options, and even helps them plan their future.

Support for afterschool providers and schools

On the program management side, microgrant.org is also here to help. In partnership with spotivity we have reached an agreement to make the spotivity SaaS platform available to all non-profit organizations at a 90% discount.  This huge savings remove cost as a barrier for program improvement and helps ensure that all teens that can benefit from our efforts do so.

The spotivity SaaS system allows program providers to “Claim Your Agency,” (should they already exist on platform), add programs to our global database freely, and grow their reach through freemium-tiered pricing and user-driven expansion if interested. We tested this system in Chicago and successfully mapped over 9,000 programs from 3,000 providers, proving it works.

It is also good to know that spotivity focuses on safety and family involvement. Features like Safe Passage Notification and Optional Parental Tethering help keep teens safe and parents informed. Plus, programs can create extra revenue with tools like our built-in team store.

spotivity has also taken things further with our Teen Rewards program, now launched in Chicago and St. Croix, USVI. By partnering with over 40 local businesses, we’re encouraging teens to participate in activities while supporting small businesses. Stores like restaurants, clothing shops, and salons offer special discounts managed directly through the app, rewarding teens for their engagement. Each business proudly displays a spotivity sticker with a QR code to help bring more teens on board.

spotivity simplifies the afterschool landscape while creating stronger connections between teens, families, and communities. Together, we’re building a brighter future for youth and the organizations that serve them.

Positive Outcomes of Self-Initiated Engagement

Research consistently shows that teens engaged in afterschool activities of their choice demonstrate better academic and social outcomes. For instance, students who participate in extracurricular activities have a 21% higher GPA on average than those who do not. The autonomy in selecting these activities drives intrinsic motivation, which translates to greater commitment and perseverance.

Self-directed engagement is also linked to increased resilience and emotional well-being. Teens participating in arts, sports, or STEM clubs report higher levels of self-esteem and problem-solving skills. Qualitative studies highlight how personal passion projects instill a sense of purpose and identity, which are crucial during the adolescent years.

Negative Outcomes of Non-Engagement

The absence of structured afterschool involvement is strongly correlated with negative behavioral and academic outcomes. Teens without such activities are 30% more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including substance abuse and truancy. Additionally, they are at a higher risk of experiencing social isolation, which exacerbates mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression.

For underserved teens, systemic barriers such as lack of access to affordable programs and transportation worsen the issue. Data from community-level studies reveal that low-income youth without engagement opportunities are 24% more likely to drop out of school than their peers.
